![]() ![]() Tap water in most places falls somewhere between 6.5 and 8.5, so it’s a good idea to check the pH of your tap water before putting your fish in it, as too high or low a pH level will seriously stress out your betta. Betta fish parents should pay special attention to pH levels, nitrite and nitrate.īettas do best when kept in water with a neutral pH of around 7, though they can tolerate a range of 6.5 to 7.5. Getting familiar with these water quality measurements is useful for understanding fish and aquarium health. Hardness (GH), a measure of calcium and magnesium ions, which are important for breeding certain species of fishes.Carbonate (KH), a measure of dissolved bicarbonate and carbonate ions, which indicates the buffering capacity, or pH stability, of your water.Nitrite and nitrate, both nitrogenous compounds that come from the breakdown of ammonia, the main waste product that fish excrete through their gills. These will measure five parameters for you: You can check pH quickly and easily by using test strips like API’s 5-in-1 Test Strips. To make sure the water in your betta’s tank has healthy levels of compounds, ions and pH, you’ll want to test it weekly. The 50-watt Tetra HT10 Submersible Aquarium Heater & Electronic Thermostat is a good option because it automatically maintains water at 78 degrees Fahrenheit and can be used in aquariums up to 10 gallons. The general rule is 1 watt of power per 1 liter (3.8L per gallon) of water for a 5-gallon tank, for instance, you’ll need at least a 20-watt heater. You will need a heater to keep the temperature in range, and you should choose one with enough power to heat your whole tank. Water Temperatureīettas need warm water between 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit, ideally at the upper range of those temperatures, to be comfortable. Here’s how to ensure you’re keeping them in the perfect type of water. If you live in a place with nice natural light, your betta may not require an artificial light source, but if the room your fish lives in is on the darker side, you’ll definitely want to give your betta an aquarium light, too.īettas have specific water needs, from temperature to pH levels and other measures of quality. The 5-gallon Marineland Portrait Blade Light Aquarium Kit is a great option for betta fish parents because it comes complete with filtration and lighting right out of the box. sea shells, dried coral or beach sand, which can alter the pH of your tank water. ![]() painted ornaments (the coating will degrade and flake off in the water).sharp decorations that can snag or tear your fish’s fins. But you can’t put just anything in your betta’s tank. You can replicate the characteristics of these environments by providing your betta with decorations like plants (real or fake), logs and caves. In the wild, bettas’ native habitats are rice paddies with plenty of places to hide and rest. (Imagine spending your whole life in a space the size of your bathroom, for instance.) Bettas are not big fish, but they do enjoy space to roam, and living in too small a tank for an extended period of time will shorten their life span. Bettas can survive in smaller tanks, but just because it’s possible doesn’t mean it’s pleasant. Your betta’s aquarium should hold a minimum of 5 gallons of water. The LS does struggle a bit more with the faded barcodes, it has a lot harder of a time even reading this one here. So it can scan even the most faded barcodes we have here. In terms of scanning faded barcodes, the LI is a lot better at that. But they're pretty similar in terms of distance away. The LS can scan a bit closer, so you can see it's almost contact, very close, and it can go back not quite as far, maybe about 24 or so inches. So in terms of scan range, the LI goes from about 2 or 3 inches, which is pretty standard for a linear imager scan range, to about 26 or so inches. In terms of scan ability, the LI is a little bit better than the LS. The LS is a laser scanner, so you can see the beam is much narrower, it is a laser, and it is configurable, so you can change how wide the beam is. The only thing that changes is how hard you can swing when you go back out to the course. This form of training does not alter your swing at all, and instead strengthens the muscles you actually use during the swing. “Everyone at the top of the backswing is starting at zero, whether you’re a long-drive champion or a club amateur.” “The most important muscles to strengthen are those you use from the top of the swing down to impact,” he says. By gradually upping the resistance each week and repeating the training, he teaches his muscles to swing faster from the top down to impact. You can see an example of one of his training sessions below.īowden’s philosophy on speed training is based on isometrics, which are exercises in which “muscles are caused to act against each other or against a fixed object.” He applies isometrics to golf by using resistance bands and mimicking the golf swing from the top of the backswing down to impact. “Rather than doing a bench press or that kind of thing, it would be better to get a cable machine.” “I don’t think that the golf industry understands yet that needs to be really specific to how you’re swinging,” Bowden says. His philosophy is simple and focuses on two main components: train your body what it feels like to swing fast through repeated reps, and workout the specific muscles used from the top of your swing down to impact. “It’s more about strengthening and speeding up the muscles that you use from the top of the backswing down to impact, in the specific way that you’re using them in the golf swing.”īowden, a World Long Drive record holder and speed-training guru, invented his own speed training program that he says can add 12-16 mph of clubhead speed within the first 30 days. “You don’t necessarily have to get big muscles or grow in size,” says Jaacob Bowden, a Class A PGA Professional. In fact, according to one speed-training expert, you can add distance to your game without getting bigger at all. DeChambeau’s method was unquestionably effective, but it’s not the only way to get longer off the tee. As if with 95% of my surroundings being water I had any other options. As if that wasn’t enough, oxygen efficiency decreases at greater depths, adding an additional layer of challenge to exploration.Īfter a certain time had passed, the female AI proceeded to inform me that swimming was my favourite physical activity. Nonetheless, deeper parts of the ocean are too dark to traverse without a flashlight or similar equipment and are home to some truly enormous predators. Granted, I was nowhere near hitting the depth of Mariana Trench, or whatever the equivalent in Subnautica might be called. Out of curiosity, I decided to dive at a depth of 500m before my oxygen reserves were depleted. Lifepods are frequently found in the depths and contain useful equipment and information, though I didn’t encounter any actual survivors. Sometimes they will provide specific coordinates of their whereabouts, but often only a few geographical clues will be available to approximate the location. These signals act as bite-sized quests to provide more context to the story. Occasionally, you will receive distress signals from other pods. Even with these limitations, there’s more than enough to see and discover, and there’s definitely no lack of content. I was eager to explore it, but an enormous leviathan quickly changed my mind. It acts as an artificial border in Subnautica and, aside from some intimidating predators, seems quite desolate. Two square kilometres around the pod can be explored, both in width and depth, beyond which lies the so-called Crater Edge. Combat is present in both cases and certain weapons can be crafted, but it’s very simplistic and not pivotal in the context of exploration. Unfortunately, exploring on land isn’t as engaging it’s still fun but lacks the mystery of the underwater depths. There are several islands as well, and I was surprised to discover elaborate alien constructions within them. ![]() The water has a pleasant amount of resistance to it and is simply astonishing during the day when rays of the sun break through its surface. No matter where you decide to go, swimming feels absolutely amazing. ![]() This is also where less common resources and objects can be discovered. Once you reach deeper points, some smaller predators begin to appear and, understandably, the field of view becomes limited. The AI itself will often scan the area to pinpoint procurement points for specific resources. This information is then stored in a databank for easy access later. Most objects within the environment, like local flora and fauna, and non-organic parts can be scanned to reveal detailed information about them or even unlock blueprints for creating new equipment. ![]() Along with those, you can find broken parts from the ship – the remains of which can be seen in the distance – as well as other wreckages, and explore small tunnels in the vicinity. Shallow waters surrounding the pod are mostly home to peaceful herbivores and some plants. The fabricator is not only used to manufacture materials but also create things like an oxygen tank, a repair tool and a scanner, among many others. In the meantime, you can also collect resources for improving equipment. Your primary goal is to find sources of food and clean water in order to survive, as well as search for a potential way off the planet. From there, assisted by a female AI, you’re pretty much free to go (swim) wherever you please. A small Lifepod, equipped with several useful utilities – including a medical unit, a storage box, a fabricator for creating new items, and a radio – is your sole refuge on a planet mostly covered by water. Subnautica begins with a huge spaceship crashing into the planet of 4546B and you take control of one of the surviving crew members. Though meditation and yoga on their own can effectively promote relaxation to activate alpha and theta waves, binaural beats can help get us there faster. In everyday life, humans operate on beta waves. Delta (0.5–4 Hz): The deepest sleep state (non-REM sleep).Theta (4–8 Hz): A deeply relaxed state inward focus the dreaming state (REM sleep).Alpha (8–12 Hz): Relaxed and passive a healing state often experienced during meditation.Beta (12–35 Hz): Functional and useful anxious sometimes relaxed.Gamma (35 Hz and up): Concentration laser focus problem solving. Here’s a look at the five different brainwave frequencies and how they affect us: Machines called electroencephalograms (EEG) can measure the oscillations of brainwave patterns using a unit of frequency known as a hertz (Hz). The human brain generates electrical activity in the form of brainwaves 24 hours a day. The science of brainwave entrainment suggests that the human brain can be synchronized to the vibration of external sensory stimuli, such as sound, to reach a certain desired state, which may promote relaxation, improve sleep, reduce anxiety, and enhance creativity, among other benefits. He says he “tucks” the beats inside his music by rendering them so subtle they’re almost imperceptible, yet the brain still hears-and responds to-them nonetheless. When you listen to Hidary’s music, you will barely detect a binaural beat. “I can predict with precision exactly the way the brain will hear it.” “As incredible as the brain is, it is also incredibly predictable,” Hidary says. He’s built a library of hundreds of them, and is conscious of how each one will be perceived. ![]() This frequency, which is too low for humans to naturally detect, can help you feel calm and relaxed.Īccording to Hidary, there are technically an infinite number of possibilities for binaural beats, since there are an infinite number of frequencies. Here’s an example of how it works: If a 200 Hz tone is sent to your right ear and a 220 Hz tone to your left ear, your brain would perceive a pulsing or beating frequency of 20 Hz (20 beats per second). To listen to binaural beats correctly, you need to wear headphones. ![]() The pulsing rhythms of binaural beats reportedly provide a host of benefits, such as reduced stress, improved sleep, and enhanced creativity, but the research is often mixed. When arranged with a slow melody and harmonic movement, the result is a soothing atmospheric soundscape that is distinctly meditative and restorative. On their own, they sound like an oscillating drone. This frequency is perceived as a steady beating or pulsing pattern that influences or “entrains” the brain, and induces alpha, theta, and delta waves to achieve a state of relaxation.īinaural beats are reminiscent of other genres of ambient music, but are often more stripped down. When two (or more) steady tones attuned to different frequencies are sent to each ear, the brain perceives them as a third frequency that doesn’t actually exist. See also A Playlist for Sound Healing Stress-Free Yoga What is a binaural beat?Ī binaural beat is an acoustically engineered auditory illusion. “ Since the aspiration of the music is to open up deeper states of consciousness, binaural beats seemed like a perfect addition,” he says. ![]() Hidary’s catalog of binaural beats on the Insight Timer app are tailored for deep relaxation and sleep. His intention is to transport listeners to a higher state of awareness to promote relaxation and healing, similar to meditation. Hidary, who is also a yogi, has been acoustically engineering binaural beats-a technique that combines two different tones to create the perception of a single one-in his music for the past five years. That doesn’t mean that your yoga class has to be totally silent, though. “You’re trying to achieve a state of consciousness through movement by connecting mind and body you’re trying to be in that state or trance.” “If the music is too melodic or too music-y, you are hearing the music more than you are zoning into your practice,” says Murray Hidary, the Los Angeles-based composer and improvisational pianist known as Mind Travel. But teachers who do choose to use music should take special care when putting together their playlist, as some selections can be distracting. ![]() Yoga teachers are divided on whether music should be used to enhance the asana experience for their students.
